How to Present the Best Smile on Valentine’s Day

Are you going on a first date this Valentine's Day? Maybe you're going to meet the one! When on a date, it is extremely important to not only look your best, but to feel your best as well. A major part of this is making sure your smile is as clean, white, and healthy as possible. Dr. Tyler Pritchard of Pritchard Orthodontics wants to help make sure your Valentine's Day goes as smoothly and is as successful as possible. To do this, here are some of his tips on what to look out for and how to fix any problems to make sure your teeth and mouth look their best:

  • Bad Breath: Avoiding bad breath is easy once you know where the problem is coming from. Bad breath is caused by gases from resting bacteria that feed on materials such as food and debris that get caught in the soft tissue areas of the mouth (primarily the tongue, gums, checks, and lips). The key is to attack the bacteria at its source by brushing and flossing twice a day and keeping your mouth and teeth healthy and clean every day. If you're thinking that gum is a healthy alternative to brushing and flossing, it is not. Chewing gum is not healthy for your teeth, will not clean your teeth the way your teeth need it, and does not prevent you from having bad breath. The one sure solution to bad breath is to brush and floss your teeth to get rid of any remaining materials stuck in your mouth.
  • Chipped or Broken Teeth: While there are many ways which you can chip or break a tooth, Dr. Pritchard also knows many ways which this can be avoided. A few of these ways include drinking and eating foods high in calcium to strengthen your teeth, using a mouthguard while playing sports, and brushing your teeth to make sure they are always healthy and strong. Using these tips lowers your chance of chipping or breaking a tooth and raises your chances of having a successful date.
  • Yellowing or Discolored Teeth: Brushing and flossing your teeth are great ways to get rid of or prevent yellow or discolored teeth. Pritchard Orthodontics recommends you brush and floss your teeth at least two times a day as well as each time after eating. Tooth whitening is also another way to present the best smile on Valentine's Day.
  • Cavities: Having a cavity can be painful. Not only can they cause food to get stuck in your teeth, but they can also cause pain when you bite down on a hot or cold substance.
  • Stuck Food: Most food gets stuck in teeth because your teeth are crooked or misaligned. One way to remedy this issue for Valentine's Day is to get Invisalign or traditional metal braces. For more information, please set up an appointment with Pritchard Orthodontics to discuss the differences between these two treatments and to see which one is right for you.
